About Communications Services

Communications Services is the department within the Office of Information Technology responsible for the campus-wide voice and data communications networks,  the cable television distribution network, and the campus two-way radio system. Communications Services also coordinates communications planning and implements connections between UCSB and Wide Area Networks (WANs) outside the campus.

Mission

Communications Services has two goals:

  1. To provide communications services to departmental customers at a lower cost than customers would incur if Communications Services did not exist.
  2. To provide communications network functionality that would not otherwise be available.

History

The Communications Services department was originally formed in 1984 by merging two departments: Telecommunications Services, whose responsibilities encompassed primarily voice communications, and Data Communications Services, whose responsibilities were to provide support of data communications.

With the implementation of computer-based networks for both voice and data communications and similar responsibilities and facilities within each department, the two were combined into a single service enterprise, Communications Services, in 1984.

In 2000 and in conjunction with the formation of the Office of Information Technology (OIT), the campus decided to merge Communications Services into the OIT. This provided for campus-wide IT planning and infrastructure services to be coordinated under one umbrella organization.
